What should I do if I was in a car accident?
Stop! Don’t drive away, even if it’s a small fender bender. Move the vehicles if they’re in the way of traffic and/or if they pose an immediate danger to yourself or other drivers on the road.
Check and report the well-being of yourself and the others at the scene: call an ambulance, police and other necessary first-responders ASAP.
Capture the scene! Take pictures of the accident and any injuries you sustained (given that they’re not life threatening). Also, take pictures of the vehicles, traffic signals and road signs, etc.
Exchange insurance information. Make sure you exchange contact and insurance information with the other person(s) involved in the accident, this is beneficial for all parties involved. If the car(s) drive(s) off or do(es) not have insurance information write down or photograph the license plate(s) of the other car(s).
Obtain Medical Treatment. Tell the medical facility every part of your body that is hurt. What you tell the medical facility will be written and can be used in your favor or against you.
Call an attorney! Don’t try to handle things alone. Even if you feel that your accident was minor and not that big of a deal, you’d be surprised at how much it could affect your health, finances and lifestyle in the future. An attorney can help you understand if your case is worth pursuing and how much it may be worth.
If you’ve been injured, don’t try to tough it out alone. LORP attorneys and staff at a the Law Office of Richard Pena, P.C. are standing by to help answer any additional questions you may have.
